Kybella Q & A

What is Kybella?

Kybella is the only injectable treatment that the FDA has approved for melting away fat from underneath your chin. Submental fat — also known as a double chin — makes you look older and heavier than you are, and blunts your profile.

Kybella contains a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid, which is a chemical in bile that dissolves dietary fat during digestion. Because deoxycholic acid is found naturally in your body, Kybella is well-tolerated.

How does Kybella work?

Kybella’s deoxycholic acid destroys fat cells in your submental area so they can’t hold fat anymore.

After your treatment, your body begins to process the dead fat cells and completely eliminates them in about three months. Once you excrete the dead fat cells, they’re gone forever.

How long does Kybella take?

Each Kybella treatment only takes about 20 minutes. Most women and men need a series of 3-5 treatments to achieve their desired results.

You may notice a change in your double chin after just one treatment, but your final results can’t be seen for about 3-6 months.

Dr. Vellanki advises leaving a month between each Kybella treatment so that your body has time to eliminate the fat and to heal from the injections. This delay also gives you time to evaluate your results and decide whether another treatment is needed or if you’re satisfied.

What happens when I get Kybella?

You only need a local anesthetic to control discomfort during your Kybella treatment. Dr. Vellanki or another team member then uses a template to mark the areas under your chin that require Kybella.

Dr. Vellanki may administer up to 20-25 Kybella injections in one session. Afterward, you may be a little sore and swollen. You control any pain or discomfort by icing the area with a wrapped ice pack for up to 20 minutes per hour, and by taking an over-the-counter painkiller, if needed.

Does Kybella tighten sagging submental skin, too?

The Kybella injections not only melt away unwanted fat, but they also stimulate your skin to produce new collagen and elastin to heal the tiny wounds.

Over time, your skin rebuilds itself and tightens to accommodate the loss of fat volume. However, if your skin is very saggy, Dr. Vellanki may recommend a different treatment.
